Isaiah chapter 29 announces judgment upon Jerusalem but also promises a future of restoration for the humble. Verse 19 highlights an inversion that pleases God: the meek will increase their joy in the Lord, and the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. In Isaiah's world the weak were crushed by the powerful; in God's kingdom they are the privileged ones. True joy does not come from wealth or power but from a relationship with the Holy One of Israel. God sees and honors the humble who depend on him. Today we can find our joy in the Lord's presence, whatever our condition. Humility opens the way to a joy no one can take away.
