Isaiah chapter 53 is the heart of the book, the fourth servant song, describing the suffering of the one who carries the sins of the people. Verse 5 summarizes the gospel: he was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. The text uses the plural our, showing that this suffering is personal and substitutionary. Christians recognize in this servant Jesus himself, crucified in our place. The peace and healing we receive come not from our merits but from that sacrifice. Today we can live in gratitude for the one who carried our sorrows and bore our guilt. Love that gives itself is the greatest proof of God's love.
