In chapter 10, Jesus uses the image of the shepherd and the sheep to describe his care for the people. He presents himself as the good shepherd, who not only guides, but lays down his life for the sheep. Unlike the hired hand, who flees when danger comes, Jesus stays and gives everything. Jesus' death on the cross is the supreme act of that shepherdly love. He is not a distant leader, but someone who commits to the very end. We can fully trust the one who laid down his life for us.
