Psalms 99:1
The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.

Explanation

The psalm exalts the holiness and kingship of the Lord: The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. The image of the throne above the cherubim recalls God's presence in the ark of the covenant. The psalm combines reverence and trust before the holy God. Today, we are called to balance intimacy with reverence: God is a close Father, but also a holy King. The Lord's greatness does not drive us away from him but leads us to worship with humility. When we recognize his holiness, our prayer gains depth. The throne of the Most High is a place of reverent awe and grace.
