Isaiah chapter 42 presents the first servant song, the figure that Christians recognize as the Messiah. The servant is described as chosen, empowered by the Spirit, and called to establish justice with gentleness. Verse 3 is moving: he will not break a bruised reed, and he will not quench a smoking flax. Instead of discarding the weak, the servant cares for them tenderly, giving them time to recover. This reveals the heart of Jesus, who welcomes the wounded and gives new hope to those about to give up. Today, whoever feels like a bruised reed or a flickering flame can find in him restoration and care.
