In chapter 12, Jesus confronts the Pharisees who accuse him of driving out demons by the power of Satan. He shows that words reveal what is inside the heart. The image of the spring is clear: out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The Pharisees were religious on the outside, but inside they harbored evil. This teaching invites us to an honest examination of our inner life. The words that come out of us point to what we have cultivated and valued.
