In chapter 19, Jesus is condemned, carries the cross and is crucified at Golgotha. Before the soldiers, the leaders and his mother, he gives up his spirit with the word that summarizes his work: it is finished. It is not a cry of defeat, but the declaration that the mission was accomplished. The sacrifice was complete, the debt was paid, salvation was sealed. Everything the Scriptures foreshadowed found its fulfillment in the cross. In Christ, the work of redemption is finished and sufficient.
