In chapter 20, Jesus rises and appears to the disciples, first to Mary and then to the gathered group. Thomas was not present and refuses to believe without seeing and touching the marks of the crucifixion. Eight days later, Jesus presents himself to him and invites him to touch his wounds. Thomas responds with the highest confession: My Lord and my God. Jesus then pronounces a blessing on those who believe without seeing. The faith of those who have not seen is just as real and just as blessed.
