In chapter 13, on the night of the Last Supper, Jesus washes the disciples' feet and gives them an example of service. He then announces the new commandment: love one another as he has loved us. The standard is not our natural love, but the love of Jesus, who served and gave himself up. That love must be the distinguishing mark of his followers before the world. It is new in scope, in depth and in source. The love we receive from Christ is the fuel of the love we offer to one another.
