Psalm 43 continues the same prayer as the previous psalm, expressing the struggle between sadness and hope. Verse 5 is an inward dialogue: why are you cast down, O my soul? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him. The psalmist talks to himself, teaching us that our emotions should be directed by faith. It is possible to feel sadness and, at the same time, choose to wait on God. Praising still, before seeing the solution, is an act of trust. The downcast soul is not the end of the story. This verse teaches us to preach God's truths to ourselves. Today, when the soul is downcast, we can choose to wait and praise. God's salvation is the reason for our joy.
