Psalm 48 is a hymn celebrating Zion, the city of the great King. Verse 1 declares: great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God. The city of God is the place where his presence dwells and his faithfulness is shown. The psalmist invites us to contemplate the greatness of the Lord, who protects his people. For us, that city points to the church and, ultimately, to the new Jerusalem. Praising God is not optional; it is the right response to his majesty. When we worship, we recognize that he is great above all things. Today we can join the community of those who declare the Lord's greatness. His faithfulness sustains the city and our lives.
