Psalm 49 is a wisdom reflection on the fragility of wealth. The psalmist observes that the rich, like everyone, cannot redeem life with possessions. Verse 15 brings the hope: but God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave, for he shall receive me. Wealth cannot buy life, but God can redeem. The psalmist speaks of a confidence that goes beyond death. That hope is fully fulfilled in Christ, who conquered death and guarantees us eternal life. Facing greed and the illusion of material security, we are called to invest in what endures. Our true security is not in possessions but in the God who receives us. He is greater than the grave.
