The psalm is a prayer of vigil: Lord, I call to you; come quickly to me; hear my voice when I call to you. David prays with urgency and watchfulness. The psalmist asks for a guard over his tongue and protection against temptation. Today, this verse teaches us to pray with perseverance and constancy. God is not far away; he bends down to hear the voice of his own. Morning and evening prayer accompanies every step of the day. Asking the Lord to guard our mouth is seeking wisdom in words.
