One of the most practical proverbs in all of Scripture. Solomon shows that the way we answer can change the course of a conversation. A soft answer, spoken with calm and respect, turns away wrath and calms the storm. A harsh word, full of contempt, only makes the fire of anger burn hotter. The text teaches that control of a quarrel begins with us, not with the other person. We cannot control the attitudes of others, but we can control our reaction. When we answer gently, we open space for understanding. Today the verse is an examination before every reply. Choosing the right tone is an act of wisdom and love.
