Solomon confronts our tendency to believe that we control the future. We make plans, and there is nothing wrong with that, but the text sets a limit: there are many devices in a man's heart. Over against them stands the counsel of the Lord, which remains firm. History is not in the hands of our strategies but in the hands of God. It is not an invitation to fatalism but to humility: plan diligently and trust the outcome to God. The counsel of the Lord endures because his promises are fulfilled. Today the verse helps us live with serenity in the face of uncertainty. Wisdom hands the future to the right hands.
