This proverb reveals how conflicts grow and how they can be extinguished. Solomon compares strife to a fire: to keep burning, it needs wood. The wood is the person who spreads gossip and fuels disagreements. When that wood stops being fed, the fire goes out naturally. Many conflicts are kept alive by gossip and the retelling of grievances. If people choose not to feed the matter, the quarrel loses its strength. We have more control over conflicts than we imagine. Today we are invited to examine our conversations. Silence in the face of gossip is a powerful way to bring peace.
