Solomon compares the right word, spoken at the right time, to apples of gold in settings of silver. The image describes something rare and precious that stands out. A word fitly spoken is not just a good sentence but the right word for that person and that moment. The chapter speaks of the wisdom of knowing when to be silent and when to speak. Sometimes the most valuable thing is silence; at other times, a timely word transforms a situation. Speaking well requires sensitivity, and this is learned in the presence of God. Today the verse invites us to treat speech as something precious. A wise word, spoken at the right time, has the value of gold.
