Solomon compares the heart to a fountain from which life flows. The heart determines what a person produces, so it deserves maximum attention. In biblical language, the heart is the center of the person: desires, thoughts, and decisions. If the heart is guarded, everything else tends to be safe; if it is neglected, nothing else is. That is why it matters to watch what feeds the mind and affections. Today we are invited to care for our inner life with the seriousness with which we protect what is valuable. Life flows from what we cultivate within.
