Solomon offers here one of the most beautiful portraits of love in wisdom literature. Hatred is compared to a fire that stirs up quarrels and divides people. Love, by contrast, covers sins: it chooses not to feed grudges and offers forgiveness. This contrast is a test of conscience for our daily relationships. Small words and attitudes can set a family, a workplace, or a friendship on fire. Love moves in the opposite direction: it absorbs the offense and seeks reconciliation. Peter and James would quote this truth to speak of mercy among brothers. Today we are invited to decide whether we will be fire-starters or peacemakers.
