Explanation
In the chapter that tells of Jacob's deceit to receive the blessing, Isaac pronounces solemn words over his son. The verse belongs to the blessing given to Jacob: that God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine. The blessing portrays prosperity and divine favor. The episode, however, is not a model to imitate: it involved lying and family division. Even so, God turned that story full of failures into an instrument of his purposes. The blessing Jacob received by deception was fulfilled through God's sovereignty. The text reminds us that God writes straight on crooked lines, without approving the error. Today we are invited to seek God's blessings by upright paths. Truth and honesty are always the best way.
