Explanation

After the fall, when sin entered the world, God did not abandon humanity. In this verse, called the protoevangelium, he announces the first promise of salvation. The enmity between the serpent and the woman points to the conflict between evil and humanity. The woman's seed will bruise the serpent's head, an image of decisive victory, though it will suffer on the heel. Christians recognize in this promise the hope of the Messiah, Jesus, who would defeat sin and death. Even in the darkest moment, God was promising a path of redemption. Today this verse reminds us that history has hope. Evil may look strong, but its defeat was already announced. In Christ, the promise is fulfilled.
