Explanation
In the creation account, God institutes marriage as part of his original plan. The man, who was alone, receives a suitable companion, and here the bond that joins them is described. Leaving father and mother indicates that marriage creates a new family unit. Becoming one flesh speaks of a deep union that involves body, soul, and the whole of life. Marriage is not a human invention but God's design, made to be permanent and exclusive. Jesus and Paul would quote these words to explain the value of marriage. Today the text invites us to honor marriage as a sacred covenant. True union is born from commitment and mutual care.
