The famine brings Joseph's brothers to Egypt, where they are received by a governor they do not recognize. Facing difficulties, their conscience awakens. The verse records their confession to one another: we are verily guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the anguish of his soul and would not hear him. Twenty years later, the hidden sin still weighed on their hearts. Suffering brought back to memory what they had tried to forget. The text shows that conscience is an echo that does not fall silent easily. God used circumstances to lead the brothers to repentance. Today we are invited to listen to the voice of conscience and to deal with the guilt of the past. God wants to heal what is hidden. Confession opens the way to restoration.
