Judah, who was once able to sell a brother, now puts himself in the other's place. When Benjamin risks being kept prisoner in Egypt, Judah offers to stay as a slave in place of the brother. The verse records his request: let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord. It is one of the most moving scenes in the Old Testament. Judah was transformed: the man who negotiated Joseph's sale now offers his own freedom. Sacrificial love made him worthy of leadership. This surrender anticipates the sacrifice of Christ, who gave himself in place of the guilty. Today we are invited to love concretely, willing to sacrifice for others. Greatness before God is not found in power but in service. Love that gives itself redeems and restores.
