Explanation
Isaiah chapter 7 takes place during a political crisis: King Ahaz fears the alliance of Syria and Israel against Judah. Instead of trusting God, the king prefers to seek foreign help, and so the Lord offers him a sign. The birth of a son named Immanuel, which means God with us, was first an immediate sign for the house of David. Yet the Christian church sees in this word the deep announcement of the birth of Jesus, the Immanuel par excellence. The name given to the child sums up the whole gospel: God does not stay distant but comes to dwell among us. Today we can live each day with the certainty that God is with us.
