Isaiah chapter 8 continues the context of crisis and shows the prophet resisting the fear of what powerful nations might do. The people were being seduced into trusting alliances and false words of comfort. Instead of fearing human power, the prophet instructs: sanctify the Lord of hosts, make him the object of reverence. The difference between fearing God and fearing people decides the direction of our spiritual life. When the fear of the Lord takes center stage, other fears lose their strength. Today's wisdom is to choose to whom we will give our hearts and our trust.
