Isaiah chapter 38 tells of Hezekiah's serious illness and his miraculous recovery after prayer. In his song of thanksgiving, the king remembers the bitterness he felt when he learned he would die, but celebrates God's deliverance. Verse 17 contains a precious truth: God, in love, delivered Hezekiah's life from the pit and cast all his sins behind his back. The expression is powerful: God places sins where they can no longer accuse us. That image anticipates the full forgiveness we find in Christ. When God forgives, he keeps nothing against us anymore. Today we can give thanks for a forgiveness that completely erases the past.
