Psalm 22 begins with a cry of abandonment that Jesus quoted on the cross: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? David goes through intense suffering, feeling forgotten and surrounded by enemies. This psalm is one of the most vivid portraits of the righteous person's pain and, for Christians, a prophecy of Christ's passion. Yet the psalm does not end in despair: it moves toward praise and the certainty that God has heard. It is possible to cry out and, at the same time, trust. When pain seems to silence God, we can hand him our lament. The Lord does not despise the cry of the afflicted.
