Psalm 31 is a prayer of trust written by David in moments of affliction, surrounded by enemies. Verse 24 is a final call to courage: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord. David ends his prayer by encouraging others to trust as well. Hope in the Lord is not passivity; it is an active and confident waiting. Whoever hopes in God finds reasons to be courageous, because he does not wait in vain. That counsel comes from the experience of one who has tasted divine faithfulness. When life presses hard, we can renew our strength by remembering that God strengthens the hearts of those who hope in him. The same God who sustained David is ready to sustain us.
