Explanation

Isaiah chapter 61 is the song of the anointed servant, which Jesus read in the synagogue and applied to himself. Verse 1 says the Spirit of the Lord is upon him to preach good news to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captives. The servant comes to bring relief to all who carry too much weight: the poor, the afflicted, the prisoners, and the mourners. God's anointing is not for prestige but for service on behalf of those who suffer. Jesus fulfilled this text when he began his ministry, showing God's heart for the least. Today we are called to carry that same message of hope and restoration. The gospel is good news for those who need it most.
