Explanation
Isaiah chapter 47 is the oracle of judgment against Babylon, an arrogant city that felt secure and invincible. Verse 8 describes Babylon's proud heart: given to pleasures, living carelessly, and saying in its heart: I am, and there is none else besides me. The city considered itself immune to any loss or calamity. The announced judgment would be harsh, because pride always precedes the fall. This scene invites us to examine our own securities: what are we trusting in? Self-satisfaction and the feeling of invulnerability are dangerous for the soul. Today we are called to depend on God, not on our own strength or luck.
