Psalm 57 was written by David when he hid from Saul in a cave. Verse 1 expresses his prayer: be merciful to me, O God, be merciful, for my soul takes refuge in you; in the shadow of your wings I will take shelter until the calamity passes. David learned to seek shelter in God in the darkest moments. The image of wings speaks of protection, warmth, and motherly care. Taking refuge in God is not escaping reality; it is trusting while the storm passes. Mercy is the foundation of that protection. When we feel surrounded and without a way out, we can run to the same refuge. God welcomes us under the shadow of his wings. The calamity passes, but the Lord's care remains.
