Psalm 36 begins by describing the wickedness of the ungodly, who has no fear of God. In contrast, verse 5 celebrates the greatness of divine love: your mercy, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, and your faithfulness to the clouds. God's goodness infinitely surpasses human wickedness. Mercy and faithfulness are the marks of the divine character that sustain life. However great the evil of the world may be, God's love is greater. This verse invites us to look up and to remember that the Lord is still good. Before cruelty and injustice, we can rest in a love that does not fail. God's mercy reaches where nothing else can reach.
