After winning a battle, Abram meets Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the Most High God. The verse describes the encounter: Melchizedek brings bread and wine and blesses Abram. This mysterious character is treated by the author of Hebrews as a figure of Christ, our eternal priest. The bread and wine anticipate from afar the Lord's supper. The episode shows that God was already preparing a way of mediation between heaven and earth. Abram recognizes the blessing and gives a tenth to the priest. Today the text invites us to recognize Jesus as the priest who intercedes for us. In him we find blessing, sustenance, and true communion.
