Explanation

Sarai, desperate because she had no children, gives her servant Hagar to Abram. When Hagar flees because of suffering, God finds her in the desert and promises to care for her son. The verse records Hagar's response: she calls the Lord the God who sees me, because he saw her in her affliction. It is an extraordinary moment: God hears the cry of a foreign slave woman. No one is invisible to God; he sees the suffering of every person. Hagar learned that she stood before the One who saw her and cared for her. Today this text comforts those who feel abandoned or forgotten. God sees us in our deserts and hears our tears.
