Sarah dies, and Abraham needs to buy a burial place in the land of Canaan. In his first words to the Hittites, he presents himself as a stranger and a sojourner. The verse reveals the patriarch's awareness of the brevity of life and the passing nature of this earth. Abraham, even having received the promise of that land, knew that his true homeland was heavenly. That pilgrim perspective did not make him detached from practical matters; he acted with dignity to honor Sarah's memory. The text teaches us to live with our feet on the ground and our hearts turned toward God. Today we are invited to live as pilgrims: enjoying God's gifts without clinging to them. Our hope lies beyond this earth.
