“Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.”

Explanation
Isaac prays for Rebekah, and God answers with the twins Esau and Jacob. The chapter tells of the sale of the birthright: Esau, hungry, trades his right as firstborn son for a bowl of stew. The verse summarizes the silent tragedy: Esau despised his birthright. The birthright included the inheritance and the promise of the covenant. Esau traded the eternal for the immediate, the lasting blessing for a passing pleasure. The author of Hebrews would use Esau as an example of someone who sells the sacred for the urgent. Choices made in a moment of weakness can mark an entire life. Today we are invited to evaluate what we are trading. What is eternal is worth more than any momentary satisfaction. Let us not sell our spiritual inheritance for crumbs.
