In the chapter of the rivalries among Jacob's wives, God answers Rachel's prayer. The verse says that God remembered Rachel, and hearkened to her, and opened her womb. The expression God remembered is a biblical way of saying that God acted on her behalf. Rachel had cried out for children and complained bitterly, but the answer came in God's time. The text shows that human forgetfulness is not divine forgetfulness: God knows every cry and every tear. He answered Rachel with the birth of Joseph. The chapter also reminds us that prayer opens space for God's action. Today we are invited to hand over to God our deepest desires. He hears and remembers his own. The answer may take time, but it is never forgotten.
