Jacob decides to return to his land and flees from Laban. When the two meet to make peace, they raise a monument and call it Mizpah. The verse holds Laban's words: the LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. It is a request for witness: that God take care of each one and judge between them. The phrase is used to this day as a blessing of separation and protection. The context shows a relationship marked by distrust, but God had taken care of Jacob during all those years. The monument reminded them that, even at a distance, the Lord watched over the covenant. Today the word Mizpah teaches that God is a witness of our relationships. He watches over us in all our ways.
