On the way to Egypt, Jacob stops at Beersheba and offers sacrifices to God. In that place the Lord speaks with him and calms him about going down to Egypt. The verse holds the promise: I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again. Jacob, already old, feared leaving the promised land, but God promised to go with him and also to return. The text shows that God's presence accompanies his children in any direction. The promise of return pointed to the future: the people of Israel would come back to that land. Jacob could go down in peace because he knew he was not going alone. Today we are invited to remember that God comes down with us to the places we fear. Those who carry God's presence can walk wherever they need to.
