“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Explanation
Isaiah chapter 9 brings a light of hope in the middle of the darkness covering Galilee and northern Israel. To a people living in oppression, God announces that a child would be born, a son given, with the government upon his shoulders. The names of this king reveal his nature: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The Christian church recognizes in this child Jesus himself, whose kingdom is one of peace and justice. The promise fulfilled in Bethlehem confirms that God acts in history to save. Today the reign of this Prince of Peace still brings hope to those living in darkness.
