Explanation

Isaiah chapter 17 announces judgment upon Damascus, capital of Syria, and also upon the northern kingdom of Israel because of its alliances and idolatry. Verse 7, however, reveals the greater purpose of judgment: to bring man to look to his Maker. In times of prosperity the people forgot the Lord and trusted in gods and abundant harvests. When disaster came, eyes turned again to the Holy One of Israel. God uses even difficulties to correct our direction and remind us of who we are. Today the question is: where are we looking? True life is born when our eyes are fixed on the Creator.
